Wantirna Primary School prides itself on providing a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment where students are challenged to reach their full potential academically, socially and emotionally. We have a strong focus on wellbeing and our students, staff and parents promote the CARE values of Compassion, Achieve, Respect and Engage.
Students are encouraged to become life-long learners with the support of our outstanding teaching staff who are committed to improving outcomes for all students. At Wantirna Primary School, students develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes with our Inquiry Approach and a stand-alone Science program which enhances our teaching and learning program. Through the incorporation of iPad technology, students use a multi-disciplinary approach to solve real-world problems based on the Victorian Curriculum. Families and friends are invited to share in their child’s learning journey when students showcase their investigations at a Learning Expo which is held in the last week of each term.
Literacy and Numeracy skills are explicitly taught, with the strategies of CAFÉ Reading consistently used throughout the school. Our Writing Program incorporates the VOICES menu into a Writer’s Workshop Model. Spelling is taught with a phonics basis and uses a visual chart based on THRASS. Mathematics teaching is based on open ended tasks which challenge the students to achieve success at their level. Teachers utilise the online Mathletics program which assists students to develop their automatic response skills in Number and Algebra and increase their understanding of Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
Staff and students participate in Tribes which is a step by step process to achieve specific learning goals. Five agreements are honoured; Attentive Listening, Appreciations (no put downs), Mutual Respect, Safety and the Right To Participate/ Pass. A set of collaborative skills are learnt, so students can work together in long-term groups (Tribes). The focus being on how to; help each other work on tasks, set goals and solve problems, monitor and assess progress and celebrate achievements.
Specialist programs are offered in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Physical Education with Languages (Spanish) being included in the classroom.
We believe in a strong home-school partnership as well as community involvement in order to develop the whole child. Parents are actively involved in all aspects of their child’s school life, including participation in School Council, the Parents and Friends Network and in support of excursions, incursions, camps and in school programs and special events.
Wantirna Primary School is known for being well connected with the local community, building strong partnerships with other primary schools and secondary colleges, Knox Council, and welcoming local volunteers. Students and teachers access Whiteboards and iPad technology utilizing wireless access. The attractive and well maintained gardens, playgrounds and sporting equipment support students’ active participation in a healthy lifestyle. Wantirna Primary School offers a highly regarded Out of School Hours Care program, with both before and after care services available to families.
For students who are transitioning from Kindergarten, our ‘Fly Into Foundation’ Program assists students in becoming familiar with the staff, school setting and routines they will expect in their first year of school.
